The German Football Association (DFB) is preparing to open talks with Jurgen Klopp after Julian Nagelsmann resigned as Germany men’s national team head coach following their early FIFA World Cup exit.

Nagelsmann asked to be released from his contract on Thursday, and the DFB accepted his request with immediate effect.

Klopp emerges as top candidate

In an official statement, the DFB confirmed it will now approach Klopp regarding the vacant position.

The federation also revealed that the former Liverpool manager has already indicated a general willingness to consider becoming Germany’s next head coach.

Klopp has been working as a television pundit for German broadcasters during the ongoing World Cup.

Nagelsmann takes responsibility

Germany’s campaign ended in disappointment after they were eliminated by Paraguay in a penalty shootout in the Round of 32.

Although Nagelsmann initially insisted he wanted to remain in charge after the defeat, the 38-year-old changed his stance following several days of reflection.

“The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann said in his farewell statement.

“My top priority has always been the team’s success. After such a bitter disappointment, they deserve the chance for a fresh start.”

Another World Cup disappointment

Germany have now failed to win a World Cup knockout match since lifting the trophy in 2014.

The four-time world champions exited in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022 before suffering another disappointing campaign this year.

Nagelsmann was appointed in 2023 after replacing Hansi Flick and guided Germany to the Euro 2024 quarter-finals, where they lost to eventual champions Spain. His contract had recently been extended through to Euro 2028.

DFB demands higher standards

Sporting director Rudi Voller praised Nagelsmann for accepting responsibility, calling him an excellent coach who still has a bright future in football.

Meanwhile, DFB president Bernd Neuendorf admitted Germany’s performances fell well below expectations and said the federation must carefully examine the reasons behind another failed tournament.

With Klopp now emerging as the leading candidate, Germany hope one of the country’s most successful modern managers can restore the national team to the summit of international football.
