Former world number one Serena Williams could be set for a surprise return to professional tennis, with reports suggesting discussions are underway for the 23-time Grand Slam champion to compete in doubles at the Queen’s Club Championships in June.

The possible comeback has created excitement across the tennis world, especially with the grass-court season approaching ahead of Wimbledon. While no official confirmation has been made yet, organisers are believed to be exploring the idea of bringing the American legend back to competitive action in London.

Serena, now 44, last played an official match at the 2022 US Open, where she reached the third round before losing to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in a thrilling three-set encounter. Soon after the tournament, Williams stepped away from the sport, hinting at retirement while focusing on family life and business ventures.

However, recent developments have sparked fresh speculation about her return. Queen’s Club is hosting women’s tennis again for the first time in more than five decades, making the event a historic occasion. Serena’s participation, even in doubles, would instantly become one of the biggest attractions of the tournament.

The American superstar remains one of the most decorated players in tennis history. Alongside her 23 Grand Slam singles titles — the most in the Open Era — Serena also owns 14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles with sister Venus Williams. The pair completed a career Golden Slam in doubles and dominated the sport for more than two decades.

Her overall achievements include:

23 Grand Slam singles titles

73 WTA singles titles

Four Olympic gold medals

319 weeks as world number one

14 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles with Venus Williams

Serena’s connection with grass courts has always been special. She won Wimbledon seven times, with her power-packed game and aggressive serving style making her one of the greatest grass-court players of all time.

The Queen’s Club Championships, traditionally known for preparing players for Wimbledon, is expected to draw major attention this year because of the return of women’s matches to the venue. If Serena officially joins the doubles draw, it could become one of the defining sporting moments of the summer season.

Though questions remain about her fitness and long-term plans, the discussions alone have already reignited interest among fans eager to see one of tennis’ greatest icons back on court. Whether it becomes a one-off appearance or the beginning of something bigger, Serena Williams’ possible return has already added a fresh layer of anticipation to the grass-court calendar.
