Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United head into the final day of the Premier League season with their top-flight future hanging in the balance. While Spurs remain favourites to survive, the Hammers still have a slim chance of avoiding relegation in what has become a dramatic end to the campaign.

Tottenham sit above West Ham by two points and also hold a far superior goal difference. Spurs host Everton on Sunday, while West Ham welcome Leeds United. For the Hammers to survive, they must beat Leeds and hope Tottenham lose at home. Only that combination would see West Ham leapfrog their London rivals in the standings.

Both clubs have enjoyed memorable European moments in recent years. West Ham lifted the UEFA Conference League trophy in 2023, while Spurs won the Europa League in 2025. However, both teams now find themselves battling to stay in the Premier League after disappointing domestic campaigns.

Tottenham’s disastrous season leaves club under pressure

Tottenham’s season has been filled with instability, poor form and managerial changes. The club has already gone through three head coaches this season, with Roberto de Zerbi now attempting to guide the side to safety after difficult spells under Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.

Spurs endured several unwanted records during the campaign, including a six-match losing streak and a 15-game winless run. Injuries also heavily disrupted the squad throughout the season. Despite the chaos, recent draws against Brighton and Leeds, along with victories over Wolves and Aston Villa, have given Tottenham a chance to stay up heading into the final weekend.

Former Tottenham midfielder Danny Murphy believes Spurs should approach the Everton clash positively rather than trying to settle for a draw. A cautious mentality, according to Murphy, could increase the pressure on the players during such a crucial match.

If relegation happens, Tottenham could face major consequences both on and off the pitch. Several key players, including Dejan Kulusevski, Cristian Romero, James Maddison and Micky van de Ven, may consider leaving the club. Financially, relegation would also hit the club hard, especially after their recent Champions League campaign and massive wage structure.

West Ham’s decline continues despite managerial changes

West Ham’s struggles can be traced back to the departure of David Moyes in 2024. Since then, the club has gone through Julen Lopetegui, Graham Potter and now Nuno Espirito Santo in search of stability and a more attacking style of football.

A poor run between November and January, where the Hammers collected only four points from ten matches, pushed them towards the relegation zone. Although performances improved later in the season, the damage may already have been done.

The club’s financial situation could worsen significantly if they are relegated. Reports suggest West Ham already posted heavy financial losses last year, and demotion would reduce broadcasting revenue drastically. Players like Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes could become valuable transfer assets if the club needs to balance finances.

West Ham’s large wage bill and the operational costs of the London Stadium would also become difficult to manage in the Championship. Football finance experts estimate the club could lose around £100 million in annual revenue if relegation becomes reality.

Premier League survival race set for dramatic finale

The final day now promises huge drama for both London clubs. Tottenham only need a draw against Everton to almost certainly guarantee survival because of their goal difference advantage. West Ham, meanwhile, must win and hope for a Spurs collapse.

For two clubs that recently celebrated European success, the possibility of relegation highlights how quickly fortunes can change in football. Sunday’s matches could define the future direction of both Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United for years to come.
