Fredrik Dversnes produced a career-defining performance to win Stage 15 of the Giro d’Italia 2026 on Sunday, surviving a tense finish in Milan after organisers neutralised the general classification contest due to safety concerns near the final circuit.
The 156km stage from Voghera to Milan was expected to favour the sprinters, but the race unfolded differently as an aggressive breakaway group managed to stay ahead of the chasing peloton. Dversnes, riding for Uno-X Mobility, delivered a perfectly timed sprint in the closing metres to secure his first-ever Giro d’Italia stage victory.
Italy’s Mirco Maestri finished second, while Martin Marcellusi completed the podium after the trio emerged strongest from the late escape group.
Breakaway Holds Off the Peloton
The decisive move came early in the stage when several riders attacked to form a breakaway. Despite the peloton increasing the pace in the final kilometres, the escapees maintained a slim advantage entering Milan’s technical closing circuit.
Dversnes stayed patient throughout the final stretch before launching his decisive sprint near the line. The victory also marked a major milestone for Uno-X Mobility, as the Norwegian team celebrated its maiden Giro stage success.
Final Laps Overshadowed by Safety Issues
The stage took an unusual turn after riders raised concerns over dangerous road conditions and barriers around the finishing area. Following discussions with race officials, organisers decided to neutralise general classification timings before the final lap to avoid unnecessary risks for the GC contenders.
As a result, overall race leader Jonas Vingegaard safely retained the pink jersey without any time changes among the top contenders.
