Tejaswin Shankar delivered a historic performance at the Federation Cup 2026 in Ranchi, winning the men’s decathlon gold medal with a new national record. The 26-year-old became the first Indian athlete to breach the 8000-point barrier in decathlon, achieving a milestone that marks a major moment for Indian athletics.
Competing at the Birsa Munda Stadium, Tejaswin displayed consistency, endurance, and technical quality across all 10 events over two days. Already regarded as one of India’s finest multi-event athletes, he produced several standout performances to rewrite the national record and strengthen his position ahead of upcoming international competitions.
Dominant opening day performance
Tejaswin started the competition strongly and finished Day 1 with 4511 points, putting himself in a commanding position for the title. His performances in the track events and jumps played a crucial role in building momentum early in the competition.
He clocked 10.77 seconds in the 100m sprint and followed it up with an impressive 7.67m jump in the long jump. In the high jump, Tejaswin once again showcased his strength in the event by clearing 2.25m, one of the best performances of the meet. He also completed the 400m race in 48.29 seconds to end the day on a high note.
His all-round showing on the opening day raised expectations that he could challenge the national record and potentially cross the historic 8000-point mark.
Consistency across all 10 events
On Day 2, Tejaswin maintained his rhythm in the remaining events, including the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and the final 1500m race. Rather than relying on one or two events, the Indian athlete managed to remain competitive throughout the competition, which ultimately helped him secure the gold medal comfortably.
His final score pushed him beyond the 8000-point barrier, making him the first Indian decathlete to achieve the feat. The performance also improved his own previous national record, underlining his growth and consistency in combined events over the last few years.
From high jump specialist to elite decathlete
Tejaswin initially gained recognition as a high jumper and earlier won a bronze medal for India at the Commonwealth Games. However, his transition into decathlon has transformed him into one of the country’s most versatile athletes.
The Federation Cup result further highlights his ability to compete at a high level across sprinting, jumping, throwing, and endurance disciplines. With Indian athletics continuing to develop ahead of major global events, Tejaswin’s record-breaking effort is expected to inspire more athletes to take up combined events in the future.
One of the biggest moments of Federation Cup 2026
The Federation Cup 2026 has produced several impressive performances across track and field events, but Tejaswin Shankar’s national-record-breaking decathlon triumph will remain one of the defining highlights of the competition.
His achievement not only secured him the gold medal in Ranchi but also established a new benchmark for decathlon in Indian athletics.
