After a two-month layoff due to illness, Emma Raducanu returns to competitive tennis only to fall in straight sets to Diane Parry in the WTA 500 event, raising questions about her clay-court readiness ahead of Roland Garros.

Emma Raducanu’s eagerly anticipated return to competitive tennis ended in disappointment on 19 May 2026 as the British number one was defeated in the first round of the Internationaux de Strasbourg, a key warm-up event ahead of the French Open. Playing her first match in over two months following a post-viral illness, Raducanu was unable to convert early momentum into a breakthrough win on clay.

The 23-year-old accepted a wildcard into the WTA 500 tournament after an extended absence that began after her third-round exit at Indian Wells in March. Despite flashes of rhythm and competitive spirit, Raducanu ultimately lost 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) to France’s Diane Parry, ranked No. 94, in a match lasting two hours and 26 minutes.

Raducanu, who recently reunited with coach Andrew Richardson — the mentor who guided her to her historic 2021 US Open title — started positively in Strasbourg, building a 4-2 lead in both sets. However, inconsistencies in her serve, including several double faults, allowed Parry to regain control at key moments. Parry’s comfort on clay and tactical shot selection proved decisive, particularly in the tight second-set tiebreak.

The defeat highlights the challenges Raducanu faces in regaining full competitive sharpness after her illness and lengthy break. Her ranking has slipped from around No. 23 to No. 37, meaning she will not be seeded at the French Open, which begins on 24 May. With just this single clay-court match under her belt before Roland Garros, Raducanu will need to adjust quickly to the demands of major-championship play on a surface that has not been kind to her recent form.

Though the result is a setback, there were signs of resilience and fight from the British No. 1, particularly in her recovery to force a second-set tie-break. As she transitions into the clay-court Grand Slam, Raducanu’s focus will be on building rhythm, reducing unforced errors, and strengthening her physical conditioning after the disruption earlier this season.
