Brazilian tennis sensation Joao Fonseca has pulled out of the 2026 Hamburg Open after experiencing discomfort in his right wrist, dealing a major blow to the ATP 500 tournament just days before the start of the main draw.
The 19-year-old confirmed the news through social media, explaining that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure in consultation with his team ahead of the upcoming French Open.
Fonseca revealed that the discomfort began shortly after arriving in Hamburg. In his statement, the young star thanked the tournament organisers for their support and expressed hope of returning in the future.
The withdrawal adds to growing concerns over the Brazilian’s fitness after he earlier battled back-related issues at the start of the 2026 season. Despite those setbacks, Fonseca has continued to impress on the ATP Tour and remains one of the brightest young talents in world tennis.
His absence is another setback for the Hamburg Open, which had already lost home favourite Alexander Zverev before the tournament. The withdrawals significantly weaken the tournament lineup ahead of the clay-court event in Germany.
Fonseca is now expected to focus fully on recovery in time for Roland Garros, which begins later this month in Paris. His team reportedly does not view the wrist issue as serious, but chose not to take risks before the second Grand Slam of the season.
The teenage Brazilian has enjoyed a rapid rise in world tennis over the past two seasons, winning ATP titles and establishing himself as Brazil’s top-ranked singles player.
