The atmosphere at the Intuit Dome felt more like a celebration than a traditional fight-week staredown. Yet when the cameras locked onto Ronda Rousey and Gina Carano during their final face-off, the tension instantly returned.
Rousey stood still, expressionless and intense — the same trademark look that once made her one of the most feared fighters in MMA. Carano, meanwhile, smiled and danced casually in front of her longtime peer, showing no signs of nerves despite stepping back into competition after 17 years away.
The fight itself already carries huge emotional weight. Rousey, now 39, is returning for what she insists will be the final fight of her career after a decade away from MMA. Carano, 44, is making an even longer-awaited comeback after nearly two decades outside the cage.
Carano’s Emotional Journey
Carano revealed she underwent a dramatic personal transformation before accepting the fight. The former star said she lost nearly 100 pounds after enduring a difficult period following her departure from The Mandalorian in 2021.
“If I’m dancing, I’m feeling really good,” Carano said during the weigh-ins.
The former Strikeforce pioneer spoke openly about rebuilding herself physically and mentally, calling the journey the toughest challenge of her life.
Rousey’s Final Chapter
While Carano brought energy and humour to the stage, Rousey appeared focused on business.
The former UFC champion admitted this would be her “very last weigh-in” and likely the final walk of her iconic career. During the build-up, Rousey has often appeared relaxed and cheerful, but her stare during the face-off reminded fans of the dominant champion who once ruled women’s MMA.
The pair later shook hands and shared a brief embrace — a fitting moment between two athletes who helped shape women’s combat sports.
More Than Just A Comeback Fight
The bout, promoted under Jake Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions banner, is expected to break purse records for female fighters. It will also become the first MMA event streamed live globally on Netflix.
Despite criticism surrounding their ages and lengthy layoffs, both fighters believe the contest represents something bigger than nostalgia.
Rousey has described it as a fight capable of “changing the landscape of MMA,” while both women have also used fight week to advocate for improved fighter pay and better treatment of athletes.
Star-Studded Fight Card
The event also features heavyweight powerhouse Francis Ngannou returning against Philipe Lins, while fan favourite Nate Diaz takes on Mike Perry in another high-profile clash.
For one night, however, the spotlight firmly belongs to Rousey and Carano — two pioneers stepping back into the cage with history, pride and legacy all on the line.
