India’s emerging golf stars delivered a weekend full of thrilling finishes as Bengaluru teenager Priya Kumari and Delhi’s Vihaan Jain captured major honours in two Indian Golf Union (IGU) junior championships held in Pune and Visakhapatnam respectively.
At the IGU Pune Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Championship, Priya held her nerve in a tense playoff against Rajasthan’s Ojaswini Saraswat to clinch the overall and Category ‘A’ titles. Meanwhile, at the IGU Andhra Pradesh Junior Boys Golf Championship, Vihaan produced a composed final-round performance to secure a memorable three-shot victory and his maiden Category ‘A’ crown.
Priya Holds Nerve In Pune Playoff Thriller
Competing at the Oxford Golf Resort in Pune, Priya Kumari showcased remarkable composure under pressure. The Bengaluru golfer drained a crucial 10-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff against Ojaswini Saraswat after both players finished tied at even-par 216.
Ojaswini had mounted a stunning comeback with a brilliant final-round three-under 69 and briefly grabbed the lead with a birdie on the 17th. However, Priya responded immediately with a birdie of her own on the final hole before sealing victory on the first playoff hole with another clutch birdie putt.
Despite narrowly missing the overall title, Ojaswini still enjoyed a successful campaign by winning the Category ‘B’ title with a commanding seven-shot margin. Karnataka’s Ridhima Kapoor claimed top honours in Category ‘C’.
Vihaan Finally Breaks Through In Visakhapatnam
At the East Point Golf Club in Visakhapatnam, Vihaan Jain finally turned promise into silverware after several near misses on the junior circuit.
The 16-year-old golfer carded a final-round two-under 70 to finish with a four-day aggregate of four-under 284, securing a three-shot victory over Haryana’s Arjun Dahiya. Vihaan had lost the same event in a playoff last year, making this triumph even sweeter.
The title race remained intense until the closing stretch before Dahiya faltered on the back nine with costly bogeys. Vihaan capitalised with confident putting and precise approach shots to build a decisive advantage.
“This feels really good. I’m happy to finally win a junior event and perform under pressure,” Vihaan said after the victory.
Delhi golfer Chaitanya Pandey dominated Category ‘B’ with a massive 10-shot victory, while Karnataka’s Aditya Tewari finished third.
Young Indian Golf Continues To Rise
The twin championships highlighted the growing depth of Indian junior golf, with several teenagers displaying composure and consistency on challenging courses.
While Priya’s dramatic playoff win underlined her big-match temperament, Vihaan’s breakthrough triumph confirmed his status as one of the brightest talents in Indian junior golf. Ojaswini’s continued consistency and Chaitanya’s dominant display further showcased the promising future of the sport in the country.
