The demanding conditions at Shinnecock Hills once again proved why the U.S. Open is regarded as golf’s toughest major. While several of the world’s biggest stars struggled to cope with the swirling wind and unforgiving layout, Wyndham Clark produced another composed performance to take complete control of the championship after two rounds.

The 2023 U.S. Open champion followed his stunning opening-round 64 with a steady 69, moving to 7-under-par (133) after 36 holes. His total not only handed him a commanding four-shot lead but also set a new 36-hole scoring record at a U.S. Open held at Shinnecock Hills.

Halfway Leaderboard

1. Wyndham Clark: -7 (64, 69) – 133

T2. Matt Fitzpatrick: -3

T2. Xander Schauffele: -3

T2. Tom Kim: -3

T2. Sam Stevens: -3

T6. Collin Morikawa: -2

T11. Rory McIlroy: Even Par

T11. Scottie Scheffler: Even Par

Clark Keeps His Composure

Unlike many players who found themselves battling the strong coastal wind and unpredictable greens, Clark remained patient throughout his second round. Although he briefly lost momentum, he responded with crucial birdies late in the day to restore his four-shot cushion.

The American has enjoyed a strong run of form over the past month, and his performance at Shinnecock has reinforced his reputation as one of the game’s best performers in difficult conditions. A second U.S. Open title would further cement his status among golf’s elite.

McIlroy and Scheffler Still Chasing

Pre-tournament favourites Rory McIlroy and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler both remain in contention, but they have plenty of work to do over the final 36 holes.

McIlroy showed flashes of brilliance but couldn’t build sustained momentum, finishing the day at even par, seven strokes behind Clark. Scheffler also battled through difficult conditions to stay level for the tournament, keeping alive his hopes of making a weekend charge despite the sizeable deficit.

Shinnecock Lives Up to Its Reputation

The historic New York venue once again delivered a stern examination of every aspect of a golfer’s game. Strong winds, thick rough and lightning-fast greens punished even the smallest mistakes.

Only 10 players finished under par after two rounds, highlighting the difficulty of the course despite slightly lower scoring than some previous editions. Several major champions, including Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson, failed to make the cut, while other high-profile contenders also exited the tournament early.

Weekend Battle Awaits

Although Clark holds a comfortable advantage, history suggests that no lead is entirely safe at Shinnecock Hills. Forecasts indicate stronger winds for the weekend, meaning every shot will carry added importance.

With experienced major champions and rising stars still within striking distance, the final two rounds promise another dramatic chapter in the 126th U.S. Open.
