Brazil’s Alison dos Santos produced a sensational performance to defeat longtime rival Karsten Warholm in a dramatic men’s 300m hurdles showdown at the 2026 Shanghai Diamond League.
In one of the headline events of the season-opening Diamond League meeting, dos Santos clocked a blistering 33.01 seconds to narrowly beat Norway’s Warholm, who finished just 0.04 seconds behind in 33.05.
Dos Santos Delivers Stunning Finish
The highly anticipated clash between two of the greatest hurdlers of the modern era lived up to expectations as both athletes battled stride-for-stride through the final metres.
Warholm exploded out of the blocks with his trademark aggressive start and held a slight advantage over the opening hurdles. However, dos Santos stayed composed before unleashing a powerful finish after the final barrier to snatch victory at the line.
The Brazilian’s winning mark became the second-fastest time ever recorded in the rarely contested 300m hurdles event. Only Warholm’s world-best 33.05 from Xiamen last year had previously been faster.
Rivalry Continues To Push Event Forward
The latest battle added another dramatic chapter to the growing rivalry between dos Santos and Warholm, who have consistently pushed each other to extraordinary performances over the past few years.
The pair have regularly traded victories across Diamond League meetings, World Championships and Olympic competitions, helping elevate the global popularity of the 400m hurdles discipline.
Warholm admitted after the race that he briefly believed he had secured the win before dos Santos surged ahead in the closing strides.
“I thought I had him,” the Norwegian reportedly said after the race, while also praising the quality of the contest.
Matheus Lima Impresses With Podium Finish
Another Brazilian athlete, Matheus Lima, also delivered an outstanding performance by finishing third in 33.75 seconds.
The 22-year-old continues to emerge as one of the rising stars in global hurdling and further highlighted Brazil’s growing strength in sprint and hurdle events.
Shanghai Diamond League Opens In Style
The Shanghai/Keqiao Diamond League meeting marked the beginning of the 2026 Diamond League season and immediately delivered world-class competition.
The unusual 300m hurdles event attracted major attention because of the rare distance and the fierce rivalry between Warholm and dos Santos. Athletics fans and experts had billed it as one of the most anticipated races of the meet.
The Diamond League season will now continue across Europe and Asia as athletes build toward the World Athletics Championships later this year.
Athletics Fans Treated To Instant Classic
The race quickly drew widespread praise from athletics fans on social media, with many calling it one of the best sprint hurdle contests in recent memory.
With both dos Santos and Warholm already in outstanding form at the start of the season, anticipation is now building for their upcoming rematches over the full 400m hurdles distance later this summer.
