In a move that bridges two of France’s greatest sporting traditions, the 94th 24 Hours of Le Mans has confirmed that Sir Mark Cavendish, the most successful sprinter in Tour de France history, will serve as the official starter when the endurance classic begins on 13 June at 16:00 local time at the Circuit de la Sarthe.
Cavendish, 40, rewrote cycling lore with a record 35 stage wins at the Tour de France — a mark achieved during the 2024 edition — and also claimed 17 Giro d’Italia stages plus three at the Vuelta a España over a distinguished professional career.
A Sporting Icon With French Roots
Known as the “Manx Missile,” Cavendish’s affinity for France runs deep, having won numerous key races on French soil. Reflecting on the honour, he said:
“France and me go back a long way. The Tour taught me everything I know about pain, glory, and pushing your limits. Some competitions transcend their discipline; they belong to all sports fans everywhere. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of them.”
His appointment underscores the shared heritage and global appeal of both the Tour de France and Le Mans — two pillars of endurance sport that resonate far beyond their respective disciplines.
A Prestigious List of Star Starters
Cavendish joins a prestigious roster of sports icons who have previously waved the French tricolour to start the endurance race. Recent starters include:
Roger Federer – Tennis legend (2025)
Zinédine Zidane – Football great (2024)
LeBron James – NBA superstar (2023)
Other notable figures who have held the honour in earlier editions include Rafael Nadal and actor Brad Pitt.
Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), commented:
“Sir Mark Cavendish is an outstanding sportsman and a fitting starter for our 94th 24-hour race. He stands for all that this event holds dear: dazzling performance and shared passion.”
As anticipation builds for the 24 Hours of Le Mans — one of the world’s most revered motorsport events — Cavendish’s role underscores the race’s status not only as a test of machine and driver, but also as a celebration of sporting excellence across disciplines.
