Ethiopian marathon runner Yebrgual Melese has died at the age of 36 following a sudden medical emergency during training, the Ethiopian Athletics Federation confirmed.
Melese reportedly fell ill during a routine training session in Addis Ababa on Tuesday while preparing for the Ottawa Marathon scheduled later this month. According to local reports, she was rushed to hospital but could not be saved despite efforts from medical staff.
No official cause of death has yet been publicly disclosed.
Federation Pays Tribute to “Heroic Athlete”
The Ethiopian Athletics Federation expressed deep sorrow over Melese’s sudden passing and paid tribute to her contribution to Ethiopian athletics.
In an official statement, the federation described her as a “heroic athlete” and extended condolences to her family, friends, and supporters.
Melese had been one of Ethiopia’s respected long-distance runners, competing internationally for more than a decade and representing the country across several major marathon events.
Career Marked by International Marathon Success
Melese enjoyed a successful marathon career and claimed victories at several prestigious international races, including the Houston Marathon, Prague Marathon, and Shanghai Marathon.
One of the highlights of her career came in 2015 when she finished runner-up at the Chicago Marathon — her best result in a World Marathon Major competition.
That same year proved especially memorable as she secured major wins in Houston and Prague, establishing herself among the top Ethiopian distance runners of her generation.
Her victory at the Shanghai Marathon in 2018 further strengthened her international reputation.
Final Months and Last Competitive Appearance
Melese’s most recent marathon appearance came in Beijing in May last year, although she was unable to finish the race.
Despite recent challenges, she had continued training and was preparing for another competitive outing in Ottawa later this month.
Her sudden death has shocked the athletics community, particularly within Ethiopia, a nation renowned for producing some of the greatest long-distance runners in history.
