Alex Fitzpatrick moved into the lead at the Truist Championship after producing a brilliant seven-under-par 64 during the third round at Quail Hollow Club.
The Englishman carded eight birdies in a composed and aggressive display to climb to 14 under par overall and take a one-shot advantage heading into Sunday’s final round.
Norwegian golfer Kristoffer Reitan also impressed with a 64 and sits second on 13 under, while American Cameron Young is third after firing the lowest round of the day, an eight-under 63.
Fitzpatrick handles pressure brilliantly
Fitzpatrick made a rapid start with five birdies on the front nine before briefly stumbling with a bogey at the 16th hole.
However, the 27-year-old immediately responded with a crucial birdie at the par-three 17th to regain momentum and maintain his lead.
The younger brother of Matt Fitzpatrick said he enjoyed the atmosphere and support from the crowd throughout the round.
“I had so much support out there, which was amazing,” Fitzpatrick said after his round.
The world number 120 is chasing his maiden individual PGA Tour title just weeks after winning the Zurich Classic of New Orleans team event alongside his brother.
McIlroy struggles after strong start
World number two Rory McIlroy endured a frustrating day and slipped well off the pace after a four-over-par 75.
McIlroy began the third round only two shots behind the lead but struggled to find consistency, recording six bogeys during a disappointing performance.
The four-time Quail Hollow champion dropped to one under par overall and now trails Fitzpatrick by 13 shots.
McIlroy arrived at the tournament in strong form after winning The Masters last month, but his hopes of another title now appear over.
Fleetwood remains within touching distance
England’s Tommy Fleetwood stayed in contention after carding a steady 70 to move to nine under par.
He shares sixth place with American golfer Justin Thomas heading into the final round.
South Korea’s Sungjae Im and Denmark’s Nicolai Hojgaard are both tied on 10 under and remain firmly in the hunt for the title.
