Defending champion Stephen Maguire made an impressive recovery to kick off his 2026 Championship League Snooker campaign, topping Group 19 after bouncing back from an opening-match defeat in Leicester.
The Scottish star, who lifted the ranking title last year, suffered a setback in his first outing when he was beaten 3-1 by England’s Ashley Carty. However, Maguire quickly regained his rhythm, defeating Haydon Pinhey 3-0 before edging past Sean O’Sullivan 2-1 in a decisive contest.
The strong finish earned Maguire enough points to claim first place in the group and secure progression to the second stage of the season-opening ranking event.
Maguire’s resilience under pressure highlighted the form that carried him to the Championship League crown in 2025, where he defeated Joe O’Connor in the final. The seven-time ranking event winner will now continue his bid to become the first player to successfully defend the Championship League ranking title in consecutive seasons.
Elsewhere, Ali Carter also advanced after topping his group, ensuring that two experienced campaigners safely negotiated the opening phase of the tournament.
The Championship League, held in Leicester, features a round-robin format in the early stages, with only the group winners progressing. Maguire’s determined comeback ensures his title defence remains firmly on track as the competition moves into its next phase.
