Kimi Antonelli continued his stunning rise in Formula 1 by securing pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, beating Mercedes team-mate George Russell.
The 19-year-old was the quickest throughout the session at Suzuka Circuit and finished 0.298 seconds ahead of Russell. Despite a mistake on his final lap, where he locked up into the hairpin, his earlier effort was enough to seal top spot.
It marks his second consecutive pole, underlining his growing authority this season.
Mercedes lock front row again
Mercedes secured a strong one-two, with Russell unable to improve on his final run. The Brit admitted the session felt “strange” after struggling with rear grip despite strong pace earlier in the weekend.
Behind them, Oscar Piastri took third for McLaren, showing clear progress, while Charles Leclerc will start fourth for Ferrari.
Lando Norris finished fifth after a difficult weekend affected by reliability issues, while Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth.
Verstappen suffers shock exit
In a major surprise, world champion Max Verstappen was knocked out in Q2 and will start 11th.
The Red Bull driver complained that his car was “undriveable” over team radio, highlighting ongoing struggles with performance and balance.
His early exit opens the door for a shake-up at the front, especially with Mercedes looking dominant.
Midfield surprises and tight competition
The rest of the top 10 featured strong midfield performances. Pierre Gasly secured seventh, followed by rookie Isack Hadjar, Gabriel Bortoleto and another young talent Arvid Lindblad.
Lindblad’s late lap was particularly impressive as it helped knock Verstappen out of the top-10 shootout.
Championship battle heats up
Antonelli’s form is now turning into a serious title challenge. He sits just a few points behind Russell in the standings, and a win in Japan could see him take the championship lead.
With Mercedes locking out the front row and key rivals starting further back, the race is shaping up to be a crucial moment early in the season.
