Four key players from the Ireland national rugby union team have committed their futures with new contract extensions following a successful Six Nations Championship campaign, strengthening the squad ahead of the Rugby World Cup 2027.
Bundee Aki, Dan Sheehan, Jamison Gibson-Park, and Josh van der Flier have all signed new deals, ensuring continuity in a squad that recently secured the Triple Crown.
Key players commit long-term futures
Aki has signed a one-year extension until 2027, while van der Flier and Gibson-Park have committed until the end of the 2027-28 season. Sheehan, the youngest of the group, has agreed a longer deal that will keep him in Ireland until 2029.
The Irish Rugby Football Union believes retaining these experienced players will help maintain stability and performance levels as the team builds towards future global competitions.
Experience and impact remain crucial
Aki, who debuted in 2017, has been a consistent performer with nearly 70 caps and multiple Six Nations titles. Despite missing part of the recent campaign due to suspension, his influence remains significant.
Van der Flier, a former World Rugby Player of the Year, rediscovered top form during the tournament, while Gibson-Park marked his 50th cap with standout performances, including a dominant display against England national rugby union team.
Leadership boost for Ireland squad
Sheehan has emerged as a reliable leader since his debut in 2021, even captaining the side in key matches. Head coach Andy Farrell praised the quartet, calling them vital leaders who consistently deliver at the highest level.
With this core group secured, Ireland have taken a major step in maintaining squad strength and leadership continuity for the years ahead.
