FC Barcelona snatched a dramatic 1–1 draw against Newcastle United after teenage star Lamine Yamal converted a stoppage-time penalty in the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 first leg at St James’ Park.
Newcastle looked set for a famous European night when Harvey Barnes fired the hosts ahead in the 86th minute, finishing from a cross delivered by Jacob Murphy at the back post. The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters as Eddie Howe’s side appeared moments away from taking a crucial advantage into the second leg .
The English club had earlier created several chances. Midfielder Sandro Tonali nearly broke the deadlock from a corner, but Barcelona defender Pau Cubarsí produced a vital goal-line clearance to keep the visitors alive in the contest.
Barcelona struggled for most of the game, with striker Robert Lewandowski missing their clearest opportunity when he prodded wide from a cross by Raphinha. Manager Hansi Flick later admitted his side had endured a difficult evening against Newcastle’s high-intensity play.
However, the match took a dramatic turn deep into stoppage time. Substitute Dani Olmo was brought down inside the box by Malick Thiaw, giving Barcelona a lifeline from the penalty spot. Yamal stepped up and coolly sent goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way, scoring with virtually the last kick of the game to silence St James’ Park and rescue a draw for the Spanish giants. The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg in Barcelona on March 18, where both teams will battle for a place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
