India vs West Indies at Eden Gardens: Virtual Quarterfinal on Super Sunday in T20 World Cup

Kolkata:  The stage is set for a high-voltage clash as India take on West Indies in a virtual quarterfinal of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Super Sunday, with the winner sealing the last semifinal spot alongside South Africa.

After a dramatic run of results in Group 1, the final Super Eight fixture has turned into a knockout-like encounter. Both India and West Indies have two points each from two matches, and the outcome of this contest will decide who progresses to the last four. Though West Indies currently hold a better Net Run Rate, the equation is simple — win and qualify, lose and go home.

India regains momentum at the right time

India kept their campaign alive with a dominant 72-run win over
Zimbabwe in Chennai, a result that helped them recover from a poor Net Run Rate earlier in the Super Eight stage. The top order finally clicked, with Abhishek Sharma’s quick half-century giving India the start they had been missing.

The middle order has been India’s strength throughout the tournament, with Ishan Kishan and skipper Suryakumar Yadav consistently anchoring the innings. Support from Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube has provided balance, ensuring India recover even after early setbacks.

India’s bowling attack has also been impressive, especially in the Powerplay. Jasprit Bumrah’s tight spells and Arshdeep Singh’s early breakthroughs have helped India control matches early, while Varun Chakaravarthy remains the team’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament.

West Indies bring explosive batting power

West Indies, however, remain one of the most dangerous batting sides in the competition. Their aggressive approach was on full display when they scored 254 against Zimbabwe, smashing 19 sixes — equalling a T20 World Cup record.

Shimron Hetmyer has been their most destructive batter so far, leading the six-hitting charts, while Jason Holder’s all-round performances and Gudakesh Motie’s wicket-taking ability have given the Caribbean side crucial balance.

Despite a defeat to South Africa in their previous match, the West Indies have shown they can recover from difficult situations, highlighted by their record eighth-wicket partnership in that game.

Eden Gardens likely to favour big scores

The pitch at Eden Gardens has largely favoured batters in this tournament, with an average first-innings score above 180. Four of the five matches here have been won by the team batting first, making the toss an important factor.

India also enjoy an excellent record at the venue, winning seven of their last eight T20Is here, while West Indies have never beaten India at Eden Gardens in T20 internationals.

All or nothing clash

With one semifinal place left, the India-West Indies encounter promises to be one of the most intense matches of the tournament. In a World Cup full of twists, the final ball at Eden Gardens could decide which team keeps the dream alive — and which one goes home.
