Host nation Italy delivered a stirring performance at the 2026 Winter Olympics, capturing gold in the men’s speed skating team pursuit with a dominant display in front of an electrified home crowd.
Skating in Final A at the Milano Speed Skating Stadium, the Italian trio of Davide Ghiotto, Andrea Giovannini and Michele Malfatti clocked 3 minutes 39.20 seconds to secure the Olympic title. Their powerful final laps saw them pull decisively clear of the United States, who finished in 3:43.71, conceding a margin of 4.51 seconds.
The victory marks Italy’s first Olympic gold in the men’s team pursuit since the event debuted at Turin 2006, ending a 20-year wait and providing one of the defining moments of the Games for the host nation.
United States Settles for Silver
The American team — Casey Dawson, Emery Lehman and Ethan Cepuran — entered the final among the favorites. The trio maintained a competitive pace through the early stages but were unable to respond to Italy’s late acceleration over the final laps of the 3,200-metre race.
Despite the disappointment of missing gold, the silver medal reinforced the United States’ continued strength in the discipline on the Olympic stage.
China Claims Bronze in Tight Finish
In Final B, China secured bronze after edging the Netherlands in a closely contested race. The Chinese lineup of Liu Hanbin, Wu Yu and Li Wenhao posted 3:41.38, narrowly ahead of the Dutch team’s 3:41.47 — a slim margin of 0.09 seconds.
The podium finish represents a significant achievement for China in an event traditionally dominated by European and North American powers.
Tactical Masterclass Under Pressure
The men’s team pursuit consists of eight laps, with the clock stopping when the third skater crosses the finish line. Seamless exchanges, aerodynamic drafting and synchronized pacing are crucial. Italy’s cohesion was particularly evident in the closing stages, where their formation remained tight and efficient while their rivals struggled to match the tempo.
Roared on by the home support, the Italian team produced a technically disciplined and emotionally charged performance — one that will stand as a landmark achievement of the Milano-Cortina Games.
With this victory, Italy not only strengthened its medal tally but also delivered a defining Olympic memory on home ice.
