Chennai: Nineteen-year-old Yuvraj Samra created history with a scintillating 110 off 65 balls, becoming the youngest man to score a century in a men’s World Cup — across both T20 and ODI formats — as Canada posted 173 for 4 against New Zealand in their crucial Group D clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on Tuesday.
Samra’s breathtaking knock, studded with 11 fours and six sixes, also made him the third youngest centurion in men’s T20I history.
It was also his maiden international century, marking a landmark moment in his young career. Notably, the knock stands as the first-ever hundred by a batter from an Associate nation in the history of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Named after India’s World Cup-winning star Yuvraj Singh, the left-handed opener reached his century in just 58 balls, adding another landmark to his growing reputation after earlier becoming the youngest player to score a fifty in this edition.
He dominated a New Zealand attack missing Lockie Ferguson and Mitchell Santner, taking on Matt Henry early with consecutive boundaries and later smashing James Neesham for 18 runs in a single over during the powerplay.
Samra shared a 116-run opening stand with skipper Dilpreet Bajwa, marking the highest first-wicket partnership by an Associate team against a Full Member nation in men’s T20 World Cup history. Bajwa contributed 36 off 39 deliveries.
Although New Zealand pulled things back in the final overs to restrict Canada below the 180-mark, the day belonged to the teenage sensation, whose fearless century rewrote multiple records on the global stage.
Chasing 174 for victory, New Zealand will aim to overhaul the target and secure qualification for the Super 8 stage. From the group, South Africa national cricket team have already advanced with six points. New Zealand currently sit second with four points and will confirm their place in the next round with a win in this match
