CORTINA D’AMPEZZO, ITALY — The women’s downhill at the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics delivered high drama as Breezy Johnson claimed gold for the United States, while Lindsey Vonn’s emotional Olympic return ended in a heavy crash on the demanding Olympia delle Tofane course.
Johnson clocked a winning time of 1:36.10, edging Germany’s Emma Aicher by 0.04 seconds, with Italy’s Sofia Goggia securing the bronze medal. The razor-thin margin highlighted just how intense and technical the downhill battle was.
The race, however, was overshadowed by the frightening fall of 41-year-old Lindsey Vonn, who crashed early in her run after clipping a gate and losing control at speed. The competition was briefly paused as medical teams attended to her, and she was later airlifted for further medical checks.
According to Al Jazeera, the U.S. Ski Team confirmed that Vonn would undergo further evaluation following the crash, casting uncertainty over what was hoped to be a fairytale Olympic comeback for one of alpine skiing’s greatest icons.
Johnson, overwhelmed after her career-defining run, reflected on the emotional moment:
“It’s an incredible feeling, but my thoughts are also with Lindsey. She’s an inspiration to all of us,” she said, as reported by Al Jazeera.
Key Result — Women’s Downhill (Final Times):
Gold: Breezy Johnson (USA) — 1:36.10
Silver: Emma Aicher (GER) — +0.04
Bronze: Sofia Goggia (ITA)
With this victory, Johnson becomes only the second American woman to win Olympic downhill gold, following Vonn’s triumph in 2010 — a symbolic passing of the torch amid a moment of both celebration and heartbreak.
