Vadodara: Delhi Capitals sealed a place in the Eliminator of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) with a five-wicket victory over UP Warriorz on Sunday, keeping their hopes of a maiden title alive.
Chasing a modest target of 123, Delhi Capitals reached home despite a mid-innings wobble, thanks to a composed knock from captain Jemimah Rodrigues, who guided her side calmly under pressure. Earlier, Laura Wolvaardt provided momentum with a fluent innings at the top, though Delhi briefly slipped from a comfortable position to 101/5 before closing out the chase.
UP Warriorz struggled with the bat after losing wickets early. Marizanne Kapp led the bowling effort for Delhi, picking up 3/30, including crucial breakthroughs in the powerplay, earning her the Player of the Match award. A late cameo from Shikha Pandey helped UP Warriorz reach 122, but the total proved insufficient.
With this result, Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz are eliminated, leaving just three teams in contention. Notably, this marks the first time Mumbai Indians have failed to reach the playoffs in WPL history.
Delhi Capitals will now face Gujarat Giants in the Eliminator on Tuesday, 3 February, in Vadodara. The winner will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the final on 5 February.
The road has been tougher than usual for Delhi, but as captain Jemimah Rodrigues summed up, “It was all about winning today.”
