Aston Villa have made a fresh enquiry to bring back former midfielder Douglas Luiz on loan as Unai Emery looks to strengthen his squad before the transfer deadline.
The 27-year-old is currently on loan at Nottingham Forest from Juventus and could leave the City Ground before Monday.
Villa reignite interest in former star
Sources indicate Luiz is open to returning to Villa Park, where he made 204 appearances between 2019 and 2024.
Chelsea have also shown interest in the Brazil international, but his preference is believed to be a move back to Birmingham.
Villa sold Luiz to Juventus for £42.5m in June 2024 to address profit and sustainability concerns.
Limited impact in Italy and England
Luiz struggled for regular game time at Juventus, making just three Serie A starts before joining Forest in August 2025.
His loan deal includes an option for a permanent transfer if he reaches a set number of appearances, a target he has yet to meet.
Midfield injuries force Emery’s hand
Unai Emery is keen to bolster his midfield after a series of injury setbacks.
Captain John McGinn is expected to miss up to two months with a knee problem, while Boubacar Kamara is sidelined for the remainder of the season.
These absences have left Villa short of options in central areas.
Gallagher setback and Abraham boost
Villa recently missed out on Conor Gallagher, who joined Tottenham from Atletico Madrid for £35m.
However, the club are close to completing the £18m signing of striker Tammy Abraham from Besiktas following a successful medical.
Strong season continues for Villa
Emery’s side currently sit third in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
They have also secured qualification for the Europa League last 16 with a game to spare.
A return for Luiz could further strengthen their push on multiple fronts.
