Victor Osimhen has emerged as the face of Nigerian football after inspiring the Super Eagles’ impressive run at the Africa Cup of Nations. The 27-year-old striker is joint second in the tournament’s top scorers with four goals, just one behind Morocco’s Brahim Diaz. As Nigeria prepare to face Morocco in the semi-finals, Osimhen’s leadership, hunger and consistency continue to drive the team’s success.
Record-chasing striker
Osimhen currently has 35 goals in 50 matches for Nigeria and is just two goals away from equalling the late Rashidi Yekini’s national record of 37 goals. Speaking about the milestone, Osimhen said, “Mr Rashidi Yekini is the best striker the Super Eagles have ever produced. I’m just trying to win something important for my country.” His focus, he insists, remains on team success rather than personal records.
Tough childhood shaped his hunger
Former Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong linked Osimhen’s mentality to his difficult upbringing. “He lost his parents quite young and had to fend for himself. That gave him real hunger,” Troost-Ekong told BBC World Service. He added, “He wants to score everything. That spirit makes him a real leader and a superstar.” Osimhen grew up selling water on Lagos streets to support his siblings.
Squad sees him as leader
Nigerian journalist Oluwashina Okeleji labelled Osimhen the “new king of Nigerian football.” He said, “Within the squad, he’s the biggest star. Even without the armband, they see him as a leader.” Okeleji added that Nigeria often struggle in Osimhen’s absence, showing his influence both on and off the pitch.
Club success boosts reputation
Osimhen’s club form mirrors his international impact. He scored 26 goals in Napoli’s title-winning 2022-23 season, helping them lift their first Serie A crown in 33 years. He later netted 26 goals in 30 games on loan at Galatasaray, finishing as league top scorer. This season, he has already scored six goals in 12 matches, underlining his elite status.
