India have announced a 15-member squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, with Shubman Gill named captain and Shreyas Iyer returning as vice-captain. The selection marks a shift in leadership while also signalling careful workload management ahead of upcoming global tournaments.
Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have been rested, while Mohammed Shami, Devdutt Padikkal and Ruturaj Gaikwad miss out despite recent domestic form. The squad largely sticks with the core group that has featured in recent bilateral series.
Leadership change and key returns
Gill’s elevation to captaincy underlines the selectors’ long-term planning in the ODI format. Iyer’s return strengthens the middle order, though his inclusion is subject to fitness clearance. His appointment as vice-captain suggests confidence in his recovery and role going forward.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue as senior batters, providing experience alongside younger players such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Kumar Reddy.
Workload management shapes selection
Hardik Pandya’s omission is linked to bowling workload concerns, with the team management opting not to risk him bowling a full quota of overs. Jasprit Bumrah has also been rested, with the pace attack featuring Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana.
According to the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Hardik has not been cleared to bowl 10 overs in an ODI, prompting a precautionary approach with major tournaments ahead.
Balance in spin and wicketkeeping
The spin department includes Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar, offering variety across conditions. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul have both been named as wicketkeeping options, continuing the rotation between formats.
