Former Salford captain Ryan Brierley has retired from professional rugby league to return to the club as its new chief executive, following the approval of a new consortium to run the reformed Salford side.
The 33-year-old ends his playing career at Oldham to take up the administrative role, just days after the Rugby Football League granted the phoenix club Championship status for the 2026 season.
Return to Salford After Turbulent Exit
Brierley was among several players who left Salford midway through the 2025 campaign, a season marked by financial instability, delayed wage payments and heavy defeats that ultimately led to the club losing its Super League status.
The original Salford Red Devils entity was officially wound up on 3 December after a year of turmoil.
Emotional Homecoming for Former Captain
“Salford is in my heart, and I believe saving its rugby league heritage is something that transcends rivalry,” Brierley said, reflecting on his decision to step into the leadership role.
According to BBC Sport, the former full-back made 95 appearances for Salford between 2022 and 2025 and captained the side during one of its most challenging periods.
He also addressed Oldham supporters following his sudden retirement.
“I hope Oldham’s incredible supporters understand that this is about protecting something we all care deeply about, and what a great club they belong to,” he added.
New Era Under Familiar Faces
The appointment comes two days after a consortium led by ex-Salford winger Mason Caton-Brown successfully secured entry into the Championship, marking the start of a rebuilding phase for the historic club.
Oldham confirmed Brierley’s departure in a statement, wishing him “every success in his new venture”.
Fitting Opening to 2026 Season
In a twist of fate, Salford’s first Championship match of 2026 will be against Oldham in mid-January.
“It feels fitting,” Brierley said. “That match will be about rebirth, a celebration of rugby league itself.”
According to BBC Sport, Salford will host Oldham in their opening fixture, symbolising a fresh start after one of the darkest chapters in the club’s history.
