Newcastle United have confirmed they are seeking clarification from Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) after a penalty appeal was rejected during their 2-2 Premier League draw against Chelsea at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Howe unhappy with VAR verdict
Head coach Eddie Howe described the incident as a “stonewall” penalty after winger Anthony Gordon was barged to the ground inside the area by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah. Referee Andy Madley waved play on, a decision later backed by VAR.
Premier League explanation
The Premier League Match Centre stated that Chalobah’s challenge was “deemed to be side-to-side in a shielding action with the ball within playing distance”, leading officials to conclude no foul had been committed.
Club seeks transparency
Howe confirmed Newcastle have formally contacted PGMOL to understand the reasoning behind the call. “A call has already gone in. We just want to know the thought process behind the decision,” he said. PGMOL has been approached for comment.
Missed chance proves costly
At the time of the incident, Newcastle were leading 2-1 before Chelsea equalised midway through the second half through Joao Pedro, following a slip from defender Malick Thiaw.
Season of dropped points continues
Newcastle’s inability to hold on to winning positions has been a recurring issue this season. The club have dropped 13 points from winning positions, more than any other Premier League side so far, leaving them 11th in the table.
Howe remains optimistic
Despite the frustrations, Howe struck a positive tone, insisting progress is being made. “My glass is very much half full. I feel we’re improving,” he said, while acknowledging the need to develop consistency and put together winning runs.
Focus turns to Old Trafford
Newcastle have managed just one away win this season and will next face Manchester United at Old Trafford on 26 December, as they look to convert performances into results.
