PM Modi Hails Historic World Cup Triumph by Indian Squash Team

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian squash team after they created history by winning their first-ever World Cup title at the SDAT Squash World Cup 2025.

In his message, the Prime Minister praised Joshna Chinnappa, Abhay Singh, Velavan Senthil Kumar, and Anahat Singh for their remarkable dedication and determination, calling their achievement a moment of immense pride for the nation.

“This historic victory has made the entire country proud and will significantly boost the popularity of squash among our youth,” Modi said, acknowledging the team’s role in inspiring the next generation of Indian athletes.

India’s landmark triumph marks a major milestone for the sport in the country and underlines the steady rise of Indian squash on the global stage.

India Make History At SDAT Squash World Cup 2025
India scripted a historic moment in squash on Sunday as the host nation clinched its first-ever Squash World Cup title, defeating top-seeded Hong Kong, China 3–0 in the final of the SDAT Squash World Cup held at the Express Avenue Mall in Chennai.

Clinical Performance Seals Victory
The Indian mixed team delivered a commanding performance throughout the final. Veteran Joshna Chinappa set the tone by winning the opening match against Ka Yi Lee, followed by Abhay Singh’s convincing straight-sets victory over Alex Lau. Teen sensation Anahat Singh, just 17 years old, wrapped up the title with a dominant win against Tomato Ho.

Unbeaten Run Through The Tournament
India remained unbeaten throughout the tournament, cruising through the group stage with wins over Switzerland, Brazil, and South Africa before blanking two-time champions Egypt in the semifinals. This historic triumph marks a significant leap for Indian squash, building on the team’s previous bronze-medal finish at the 2023 edition.

Nationwide Praise And Impact
The victory has drawn widespread acclaim across the country. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior leaders congratulated the team, calling the achievement a source of national pride and an inspiration for aspiring athletes, particularly as squash gears up for its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028.
