Mumbai Indians all-rounder Shardul Thakur has confirmed that captain Hardik Pandya is currently sidelined with an injury, putting an end to growing speculation surrounding the skipper’s absence from recent IPL 2026 matches.
Hardik has missed Mumbai’s last few games, leading to widespread rumours on social media about his fitness and even questions regarding his future with the franchise. Following MI’s victory over Punjab Kings, Shardul finally addressed the issue publicly.
Shardul Explains Hardik’s Situation
Speaking after the match, Shardul revealed that Hardik had been struggling with an injury and therefore could not travel with the team for a couple of fixtures.
He added that the MI skipper had travelled to Raipur for the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru but was ultimately unable to play. According to Shardul, Hardik is now training in Mumbai and is expected to return for the upcoming clash against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata.
Jasprit Bumrah Leads MI In Hardik’s Absence
With Hardik unavailable and Suryakumar Yadav absent due to personal reasons, Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai Indians for the first time this IPL season against Punjab Kings.
Mumbai produced one of their strongest performances of the campaign, defeating PBKS thanks to a brilliant all-round display. Shardul starred with the ball, while Tilak Varma played a match-winning unbeaten knock to guide MI home.
Rumours Continue Around Hardik
Hardik’s absence had triggered intense online discussion, especially given Mumbai Indians’ inconsistent season under his leadership. However, Shardul dismissed much of the speculation, saying social media chatter should not always be taken seriously.
The MI all-rounder stressed that players and management remain focused on performances rather than outside noise.
MI Hoping For Timely Return
Mumbai Indians are still fighting to stay alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race, making Hardik’s return increasingly important for the franchise.
The all-rounder has endured a mixed campaign so far with both bat and ball, but his leadership and experience remain crucial for the five-time champions.
If declared fit, Hardik could return for MI’s crucial upcoming encounter against Kolkata Knight Riders next week.
