China’s world champion long jumper Wang Jianan has been cleared of a doping violation after hospital CCTV footage supported his explanation for testing positive. Wang, 29, became Asia’s first men’s long jump world champion with his 8.36m effort in Oregon in 2022.
Drug Linked to Relative’s Treatment
Wang failed an out-of-competition test in November 2024 when traces of terbutaline, a medication commonly used for asthma treatment, were found in his sample. According to the China Anti-Doping Agency (Chinada), the substance entered his system through passive inhalation as he accompanied a family member receiving nebuliser treatment in a hospital.
Chinada Finds No Fault
Chinada ruled that Wang bore no fault or negligence and therefore should not face a ban. His explanation was supported by footage showing his presence during the medical procedure, as well as relevant patient records.
AIU Confirms the Findings
The Athletics Integrity Unit reviewed the case, examining the hospital’s CCTV files, documents, and an independent expert’s opinion. The expert noted that passive transfer of terbutaline “could not be excluded”, and the AIU stated there was “nothing suspicious” about the material provided by Chinada.
