Lionel Messi delivered another masterclass as Inter Miami booked their spot in the MLS Eastern Conference final for the first time. The Argentine star scored a first-half header and assisted three more in a 4-0 win over Cincinnati — taking his post-season tally to 12 goal contributions, the most in MLS history.
Perfect execution
Miami coach Javier Mascherano praised his side after they controlled a tough away fixture.
“The players showed incredible character and played a practically perfect match,” he said, adding it was a “privilege” to manage Messi and the squad.
Messi opened the scoring after linking with Mateo Silvetti — preferred in the lineup ahead of Luis Suárez — and arriving in the box to meet the return cross. He later sent a pass through for the 19-year-old to double the lead.
Teen talent steps up
Tadeo Allende then profited from Messi’s precision, scoring twice from superb through balls as Miami turned the game into a statement victory.
Mascherano also highlighted Messi’s effort without possession: “We know what Leo does with the ball. Today, he worked incredibly hard off it too.”
History in sight
Miami finished the regular season third in the conference, just a point behind Philadelphia and level with Cincinnati. Now they will face either Philadelphia or New York City for a chance to reach the MLS Cup final — and push Messi closer to another major title.
