Pre-Match Ceremony Turns Violent
What should have been a routine handshake between Under-17 teams erupted into chaos when North Korean players began forcefully punching their Japanese opponents. The incident occurred during the pre-game lineup ahead of the last-16 match at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar on Tuesday.
Japanese FA Calls for Action
The Japanese Football Association has requested FIFA intervene following the unusual display, emphasizing that match officials did not sanction the North Korean players at the time. A spokesperson told the Japanese outlet Chunichi: “We would like to ask FIFA for a decision.”
Match Outcome Overshadows Incident
Despite the strange pre-match behaviour, Japan advanced to the quarter-finals, winning the penalty shootout 5-4 after a 1-1 draw. Japan’s Jelani McGhee opened the scoring in the fourth minute, while Ri Hyok Gwang equalized for North Korea in the second half. Japan’s run ended in the semi-finals with a 1-0 defeat to Austria.
Global Attention on Sportsmanship
