The opening Test of the 2025-26 Ashes series began at Perth Stadium on Friday, with England winning the toss and choosing to bat first. However, the visitors were quickly on the back foot, managing just 172 all out against a disciplined Australian attack.
Harry Brook was the lone standout for England, fighting valiantly for a half-century, while the rest of the batting line-up struggled to make an impact.
Australia’s bowling was led by Mitchell Starc, who tore through England’s order, taking seven wickets. Starc became the first left-arm pacer and 21st bowler overall to reach 100 Ashes wickets, claiming key scalps including openers Crawley and Duckett, Joe Root, and England captain Ben Stokes. Debutant Brendan Doggett also impressed, picking up two wickets.
In reply, Australia began shakily, losing debutant opener Jake Weatherald for a duck, trapped LBW by England pacer Jofra Archer. Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne are currently at the crease, looking to steady the innings.
With England’s batting collapse and Australia’s dominant bowling, the hosts are well-placed to build a big total and put the visitors under pressure. The stage is set for a fiercely contested Ashes series.
