Bhubaneswar:
Wei Yi Ends Arjun’s Run in Rapid Tiebreak
In a dramatic quarterfinal showdown at the 2025 FIDE World Cup, China’s Wei Yi eliminated India’s Arjun Erigaisi by 2.5–1.5 in rapid tiebreaks after both classical games ended in draws.
Wei converted his advantage in the second rapid game, promoting a pawn to a queen and forcing Arjun’s resignation on move 79.
Arjun had defended well in the first rapid game, managing to hold Wei to a draw despite a difficult middlegame.
Sindarov and Esipenko Seal Their Semifinal Spots
Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan staged a comeback to beat Jose Martinez in the tiebreaks. After losing the first rapid game, Sindarov won the second, drew the first 10+10 rapid, then clinched the match in the final 10+10 game.
Meanwhile, Andrey Esipenko of Russia defeated Sam Shankland (USA) 4–2. After both players won one game apiece in the 15+10 rapid section, Esipenko dominated the 10+10 phase with two consecutive wins.
Semifinal Lineup and What’s At Stake
The semifinal pairing is now set: Wei Yi will face Andrey Esipenko, while Sindarov will meet his compatriot Nodirbek Yakubboev, guaranteeing at least one Uzbek in the final.
All three semifinalists – Wei Yi, Sindarov, and Esipenko – are in strong contention for one of the three available spots in the 2026 Candidates Tournament, making their wins in the tiebreaks especially significant.
India’s Challenge Ends as Arjun Exits
Arjun Erigaisi’s exit marks the end of India’s campaign in this edition of the World Cup.
Despite his resilience, especially in the rapid games, he couldn’t overcome Wei’s precise play.
This result puts a spotlight back on India’s other contenders, as their hopes for a 2026 Candidates spot will now depend on alternate qualification paths.
