Cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara has been reappointed as the head coach of Rajasthan Royals ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Sangakkara, who previously led the Royals’ coaching setup from 2021 to 2024, returns to the role after serving as the team’s Director of Cricket.
Sangakkara, a former Sri Lanka captain, is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen in cricket history. Over his international career, he scored over 28,000 runs across formats, with a remarkable average above 40 in Tests and ODIs. Renowned for his sharp wicketkeeping skills and leadership, Sangakkara has won multiple ICC Player of the Year honors and was pivotal in guiding Sri Lanka to the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 final.
During his previous tenure as Royals head coach, Sangakkara led the team to the IPL final in 2022 and ensured a playoff spot in 2024, earning praise for his tactical acumen and calm leadership. He now replaces Rahul Dravid, who helmed the team for IPL 2025.
Rajasthan Royals had a challenging IPL 2025 season, finishing in the lower half of the table. With a blend of emerging young talent and experienced players, Sangakkara’s return could prove crucial in steering the franchise back to the top.
“I am thrilled to return as head coach. The Royals have always been close to my heart, and I look forward to working with this talented squad to deliver our best in the upcoming season,” Sangakkara said.
The IPL 2026 season promises exciting cricket, and Rajasthan Royals fans will be eager to see how Sangakkara’s leadership influences the team’s performance.
Rajasthan Royals have also made a high-profile move in the off-season, acquiring Ravindra Jadeja from Chennai Super Kings in a trade deal that saw Sanju Samson move to CSK. The addition of Jadeja, an experienced all-rounder and former captain, is expected to strengthen the Royals’ balance and add depth to both batting and bowling.
