The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) secured an eventful and hard-fought 2-1 victory over a tenacious Paraguay side in an international friendly at Subaru Park. The match, intended as a crucial World Cup tune-up, was marked by dazzling early goals, a late game-winner from Folarin Balogun, a magnificent return to form for Gio Reyna, and a dramatic, bench-clearing melee just before the final whistle.
The result is a positive step for the USMNT as they continue preparations, but the chippy nature of the contest underscored the competitive hunger of both sides.
Electric Start Sees Goals Traded in Six Minutes
The game exploded into action, with both teams finding the back of the net within the opening 10 minutes, setting a frantic tone for the evening.
1-0 USA (Reyna, 4′): The breakthrough came early and was a moment of personal triumph for Gio Reyna, making a noteworthy return to the starting XI after a spell away from the national team. Wingback Max Arfsten whipped in a perfectly weighted cross, and Reyna rose above his marker to score a rare header, cushioning the ball off the underside of the crossbar to put the USMNT ahead.
1-1 Paraguay (Arce, 10′): Paraguay responded almost immediately. Atlanta United star Miguel Almirón showed his class on the left flank, delivering a spectacular volleyed cross. Striker Álex Arce displayed sharp movement to get free inside the box and convert with a diving header, leveling the score and silencing the home crowd.
Following the early rush of goals, the first half settled into a midfield battle, with the USMNT maintaining the bulk of possession but struggling to break down Paraguay’s compact defensive structure, leading to a tense 1-1 deadlock at the break.
Balogun Breaks the Stalemate with Reyna as Creator
The second half was a tactical affair until a brilliant sequence in the 71st minute saw the home side finally reclaim the lead.
2-1 USA (Balogun, 71′): The decisive goal was a testament to the dynamic partnership between the two goalscorers. Pressing high, the US forced a turnover outside the box. Reyna collected the ball, drove toward the endline, and fired a dangerous, low cutback. The pass deflected off a defender and fell directly to Folarin Balogun, who clinically swept the ball home into the far corner, confirming his status as the team’s primary finisher.
Reyna, who not only scored but was instrumental in the game-winner, was the clear standout, marking a potentially pivotal night for the Borussia Mönchengladbach attacker’s international career.
Late Drama and Unfriendly Fire
The closing minutes saw Paraguay push desperately for an equalizer, creating a few anxious moments for the US defense, anchored by veteran Tim Ream. However, the true drama arrived in second-half stoppage time.
A seemingly innocuous challenge for a ball that went out of play near the touchline quickly erupted into a chaotic, bench-clearing brawl. Players from both sides rushed toward the commotion, with pushing, shoving, and heated words exchanged in a very “un-friendly” conclusion to the contest. Despite the intensity of the melee, which reportedly saw a Paraguay bench player sent off, the referee managed to restore order without issuing any red cards to the players on the field.
The USMNT held firm through the final moments to seal the 2-1 victory, providing coach Mauricio Pochettino with a valuable win, a stellar performance from Reyna, and plenty of competitive fire to analyze before their next clash.
