Australia captain Pat Cummins says he is “on track” to return for the second Ashes Test against England in Brisbane.
Recovery Going Smoothly
Cummins has been sidelined with a lower back injury since the Test series against the West Indies in July. He will miss the opening Ashes Test in Perth, starting on 21 November, but remains confident of a comeback for the day-night match at the Gabba from 4 December.
“It’s all feeling really good, on track and probably better than I expected,” Cummins said. “Each session is incremental. Once I get over to Perth, I should be pretty close to a full run-up and getting some overs in.”
Smith to Lead in Perth
With Cummins unavailable, Steve Smith will captain Australia for the first Test. The former skipper, who lost the role in 2018 after the ball-tampering scandal, returns to the leadership role temporarily.
The 35-year-old will lead a bowling unit featuring Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland as Australia begin their defence of the Ashes at home.
Strong Record Against England
Cummins played a crucial role when Australia retained the Ashes with a 2-2 draw in England last year. He took 18 wickets in that series and has an impressive overall record of 91 wickets in 19 Tests against England at an average of just over 24.
Despite his recent injury, the fast bowler remains optimistic. “It’s probably not until you get a bit closer that you can really know where you’re at,” he said. “The good thing is that I’m pulling up well and the body is great.”
Eyes on Workload Management
Cummins hinted that his workload could determine how many Tests he plays once he returns. “I don’t really want to commit to anything this far out,” he said. “If we have a big game and bowl 40 or 50 overs, then have another Test starting soon after, it might be a bit too much.”
Australia have not lost an Ashes series at home since 2010-11, and Cummins’ potential return in Brisbane could provide a major boost to their campaign.
