World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka will meet Australian star Nick Kyrgios in a special “Battle of the Sexes” match at Dubai’s Coca-Cola Arena on 28 December. The exhibition clash will be played in front of a packed 17,000-seat crowd.
A modern version of a classic rivalry
The event takes inspiration from the famous 1973 meeting between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, which became a landmark moment for women’s tennis. The last such contest happened in 1992 when Jimmy Connors defeated Martina Navratilova under modified rules.
Sabalenka confident ahead of the clash
The Belarusian, winner of four Grand Slam titles, said she’s eager to take on the challenge.
“I respect Nick and his game, but I’ll be bringing my A-game,” Sabalenka said.
Kyrgios eyes spotlight on return
Kyrgios, currently ranked 652nd, has featured in only a handful of matches this season after a long injury layoff. He last appeared on the ATP Tour at the Miami Open in March.
“When the world number one calls you out, you don’t say no,” Kyrgios said. “Aryna’s a champion, but I’m here to compete and entertain.”
Fans divided over the concept
The exhibition, organised by the Evolve agency, has drawn mixed reactions online. Some believe it will attract new audiences, while others fear it could undermine women’s tennis if Sabalenka is defeated.
Spotlight over controversy
Sabalenka has brushed off the criticism. Speaking earlier at the US Open, she called the idea “fun” and joked that she would “kick Nick’s ass.”
Final details of the format, including possible serving limits and court tweaks, are still being discussed.
