U23 World Championships Day 2: Yakushenko, Mohammadi, and Shamsipour Shine in Greco-Roman Battles
Novi Sad, Serbia – Day 2 of the U23 World Wrestling Championships 2025 delivered gripping Greco-Roman action across the 55 kg, 67 kg, 72 kg, and 97 kg categories.
At 97 kg, Ukraine’s Yehor Yakushenko edged returning silver medalist Abubakr Khaslakhanau (UWW) 3-3 on criteria, after trailing early. He had earlier dominated Luka Gabisonia (GEO) 8-0.
Iran’s Iman Mohammadi impressed at 72 kg, beating Ruslan Nurullayev (AZE) 5-3 after a 10-4 win over Mate Vegh (HUN) and a 6-0 opener against Oleh Khalilov (UKR).
At 55 kg, Armin Shamsipour (IRI) crushed Nurbolot Berdikulov (KGZ) 13-3, while Alibek Amirov (UWW) blanked Vikramjit More (IND) 9-0. Earlier, More had earned India’s first win, overcoming Denis Mihai (ROU) 5-3.
In the 67 kg division, Anri Khozrevanidze (GEO) stunned Ahmadreza Mohsen Nezhad (IRI) 5-4 to make the semifinals, though Mohsen Nezhad earlier dominated Azat Sariyar (TUR) 7-1 and Ardit Zeneli (ALB) 8-0. Hleb Makaranka (UWW) upset Daniial Agaev (UWW) 5-1.
Germany’s Darius Kiefer fought hard through the 97 kg rounds, beating Tomislav Brkan (CRO) 7-4 before falling to Maksim Averin (UWW) 1-3. Richard Karelson (EST) impressed with a 9-0 win over Javokhir Shodiyarov (UZB), while Iran’s Hadi Seydi defeated Dorian Trejo Olguin (MEX) 10-0 before losing to Khaslakhanau.
Iran and Ukraine led the day with powerful par terre execution and tight tactical wins as semifinalists were decided across the weight classes in Novi Sad.
