Kyle Dake added another remarkable achievement to his wrestling career by winning the men’s freestyle 86kg gold medal at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The American defeated Arsenii Dzhioev of Azerbaijan 3-2 in the final on October 31, securing his fifth senior world title and his first at 86kg.

At 35, Dake also became the oldest American wrestler to win a world championship. With this victory, he joined Russia’s Abdulrashid Sadulaev as the only wrestlers to have won senior world titles across three different weight categories.

Dake Adds 86kg Gold to His World Championship Collection

Dake had previously dominated the 79kg category, winning consecutive world titles in 2018 and 2019. He then moved to 74kg and secured back-to-back gold medals in 2021 and 2022.

His latest triumph at 86kg completed an extraordinary achievement across three weight divisions. The American now has six World Championships medals overall, including a silver medal from 2023.

The final against Dzhioev was particularly significant as Dake had lost to the Azerbaijani wrestler earlier in the year. This time, he managed to reverse that result and claim the biggest prize.

A Closely Contested 3-2 Final

The gold-medal bout at Barys Arena was a tactical contest, with both wrestlers looking for openings during the early exchanges. Dake took a 1-0 lead through an activity point in the first period.

The American extended his advantage in the second period with an important takedown. After Dzhioev countered his initial double-leg attempt, Dake switched to a single-leg attack, lifted his opponent’s leg and managed to bring him down for two points.

Dzhioev responded with a stepout and an activity point, reducing the deficit to 3-2 with 35 seconds remaining.

The Azerbaijani wrestler pushed forward in the closing moments, searching for a decisive takedown. However, Dake defended the attack, maintained his position and held on until the final whistle to secure the 3-2 victory.

Dake Reflects on His Journey Back to the Top

Following the victory, Dake described the title as potentially his favourite world championship achievement. He spoke about the personal difficulties he had faced in recent years, including the loss of his father in 2024 and his son’s serious illness.

He had also fallen short of his target at the previous year’s World Championships after losing the US trials to Zahid Valencia, who went on to win the 2025 world title.

Dake returned to the trials this year, defeated Valencia and earned his place in the US team. His performance in Astana eventually brought him back to the top of the world podium.

The American credited his training environment and support system for helping him maintain his competitive level. He has been associated with the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club in Pennsylvania since 2022.

Iran and Russia Also Secure Gold Medals

The eighth day of the championships also saw Iran claim two freestyle gold medals. Ahmad Javan defeated Russia’s Zavur Uguev to win the 61kg title, while Amir Hossein Zare dominated the 125kg final with an 11-0 victory over Abdulla Kurbanov.

Russia’s Ibragim Ibragimov won the other gold medal on the day, defeating Kyrgyzstan’s Ernazar Akmataliev 5-2 in the 70kg final.

For the United States, Dake’s victory was accompanied by bronze medals for Marcus Blaze at 61kg and Zain Retherford at 70kg. Dake’s fifth world title, however, remained the standout result of the day in Astana.
