Bhubaneswar : The 2025 U23 World Championships kicked off in Novi Sad, Serbia, with an action-packed Day 1 that showcased both established champions and emerging young talents. Nearly 700 wrestlers from around the world gathered for the eighth edition of this prestigious event, with Greco-Roman bouts setting the tone for an electrifying start.
In the 63kg category, Moldova’s Vitalie Eriomenco powered his way into the semifinals after an impressive performance, displaying technical precision and relentless aggression. Over in the 77kg division, Hungary’s Levente Levai looked unstoppable, storming through his opponents with convincing victories, including a dominant 9-0 win.
The Iranian contingent, however, stole the spotlight on Day 1. At 87kg, Gholamreza Farokhi, making his debut in this weight class, registered a superb 8-0 technical-superiority win, underlining Iran’s depth in Greco-Roman wrestling. His compatriot, Fardin Hedayati, the defending 130kg champion, needed only 41 seconds to claim his opening win by technical superiority, signaling his intent to retain his crown.
Elsewhere, Yassine Ben Labed of Poland created a stir by advancing unexpectedly in the 87kg category, adding a twist to the day’s proceedings. The blend of dominant displays and surprise breakthroughs ensured that the opening day lived up to its billing as one of high energy and fierce competition.
With the early rounds now complete, the stage is set for thrilling semifinals as the world’s best U23 Greco-Roman wrestlers battle for glory in Serbia. Day 1 made it clear — the road to gold will be as intense as it is unpre dictable.
