Ruben Amorim heads into Manchester United’s return to Premier League action with renewed optimism — but the next four fixtures could prove decisive in shaping the club’s season.
A 2-0 win over Sunderland before the international break eased the pressure on Amorim after a poor defeat at Brentford. Backed publicly by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Portuguese coach now faces a defining spell as United look to climb from 10th in the table and chase a European spot.
Tough start at Anfield
United’s next challenge comes at Anfield, where they haven’t won since 2016. Amorim’s men face champions Liverpool in what is arguably their toughest assignment of the season. The last time the sides met, United snatched a 2-2 draw through Amad Diallo’s late equaliser, but the fixture remains a daunting prospect.
Amorim knows consistency is key. “When we fight for every ball and stay focused, we are a good team,” he said earlier this year. “If we don’t do that all the time, we lose games.”
Brighton, Forest, and Spurs tests ahead
After Liverpool, United host Brighton — a team that has won three successive league games at Old Trafford. Last season’s 3-1 defeat exposed defensive lapses and goalkeeping errors, prompting Amorim to admit: “We are maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United.”
A trip to Nottingham Forest follows, where United have lost two seasons in a row. The last time out, former United winger Anthony Elanga scored the winner, deepening the frustration among fans.
Then comes Tottenham away, a fixture that has repeatedly haunted United. Spurs have beaten them four times under Amorim, including the Europa League final that denied them Champions League qualification.
A pivotal month ahead
These four matches will test United’s mentality and Amorim’s progress as manager. With Ratcliffe urging patience but supporters demanding improvement, a strong run could ease doubts — but another poor stretch could reignite old concerns.
The coming month may not decide United’s long-term future, but it will certainly define how this season is remembered.
