Barcelona’s unbeaten run in La Liga came to an abrupt end as Sevilla handed them a humiliating 4-1 loss at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium on Sunday. The defeat also denied Hansi Flick’s side a chance to reclaim the top spot in the table.
Sevilla end decade-long drought
This was Sevilla’s first league win over Barcelona since 2015. The victory lifted them to fourth in the table with 13 points from eight games, while Barcelona stayed second with 19 points — two behind leaders Real Madrid.
Early dominance from the hosts
Sevilla began with high intensity and took the lead in the 13th minute when Alexis Sanchez converted a penalty after Isaac Romero was fouled by Ronald Araujo inside the box. Sanchez sent Wojciech Szczesny the wrong way to make it 1-0.
Romero doubled the advantage in the 36th minute, finishing off Ruben Vargas’ low cross after beating Barcelona’s high defensive line.
Rashford offers brief hope
Barcelona pulled one back in first-half stoppage time through Marcus Rashford, who volleyed home Pedri’s chipped pass from a tight angle to make it 2-1 at the break.
Lewandowski’s missed chance
The visitors pushed forward after the interval and earned a penalty in the 76th minute when Adnan Januzaj fouled Alejandro Balde. However, Robert Lewandowski failed to convert, firing his spot-kick wide.
Sevilla seal emphatic win
Jose Angel Carmona restored Sevilla’s two-goal cushion in the 90th minute, before substitute Akor Adams completed the rout in added time with a composed finish from Chidera Ejuke’s assist.
Reaction and next fixtures
“We lacked intensity and didn’t know what to do with the ball,” admitted Barcelona midfielder Pedri. “We need to improve a lot to start winning again.”
Sevilla, who have now won two games in a row, will face Mallorca on October 18, while Barcelona host Girona on the same day.
