Bhubaneswar: British endurance swimmer Ross Edgley has achieved a world-first by becoming the only athlete to circumnavigate the entire coastline of Iceland. Starting on May 17, 2025, and finishing four months later on September 8 in Reykjavík, Edgley covered nearly 1,000 miles of the island’s treacherous North Atlantic waters.
Battling freezing temperatures as low as 3°C, strong waves, and encounters with killer whales, Edgley swam in six-hour shifts before resting aboard a support boat. The extreme challenge left him with injuries such as wetsuit chafing and even parts of his tongue worn away by constant saltwater exposure. To sustain himself, he consumed between 10,000 and 15,000 calories daily.
Alongside the feat of endurance, Edgley contributed to science by collecting environmental DNA samples to study microplastics and marine ecosystems. His arrival in Reykjavík was marked with Viking horns and champagne, sealing his place in the record books.
