BCCI Strips Bengaluru of Key Matches After Stampede, Raising Questions Over KSCA’s Management

Bengaluru, June 10, 2025 – The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a drastic step by relocating all scheduled matches from Bengaluru’s iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium following a deadly stampede during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL victory celebrations. The three-match India ‘A’ vs South Africa ‘A’ One Day series, set for November 13–19, has been moved to Rajkot .

Stampede Sparks Fallout

On June 4, a chaotic crush outside Chinnaswamy claimed 11 lives and injured roughly 75 individuals as fans attempted to enter the stadium gates at the same time . Compounding the tragedy, parts of the stadium infrastructure were damaged, prompting deep concern over crowd safety and operational oversight .

Leadership Shakeup at KSCA

In a move signaling accountability, KSCA secretary A. Shankar and treasurer E.S. Jairam resigned from their positions, calling it “moral responsibility” despite asserting limited roles in event planning . The resignations follow mounting criticism and pressure from KSCA members and former cricketers, who demanded top brass step down .

However, the KSCA is resisting legal consequences—petitioning the Karnataka High Court to quash FIRs naming officials, while being granted interim protection from coercive action .

Broader Fallout: Future of Bengaluru Cricket in Question

The BCCI cited administrative instability at KSCA and stadium damage as factors behind the venue shift . Administrative uncertainties and escalating investigations are threatening the stadium’s ability to host major events, including the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, where Bengaluru was scheduled to host the opening match and a semi-final

Government Enters the Fray

Reacting to intense scrutiny, the Karnataka government has launched multiple investigations:

A judicial probe led by Justice John Michael D’Cunha, with support from retired IAS and IPS officers, is underway .

A magisterial inquiry and a CID-led criminal investigation have also been initiated.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has hinted at relocating the stadium to Bengaluru’s outskirts. Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi is reviewing land lease agreements, citing a possible ₹203 crore revenue loss due to underpriced rents .

Path Ahead for Bengaluru Cricket

Stadium readiness: With damaged infrastructure and safety protocols under scrutiny, Chinnaswamy must undergo significant repairs and upgrades. These changes are vital before any major event can return .

KSCA governance: The association must hold an SGM within 45 days to elect new officers for secretary and treasurer roles .

BCCI and ICC decisions: With the 2025 home season underway under revised venues, there is increasing doubt whether Bengaluru will retain its status as a go-to cricketing hub without assured safety and transparent governance.

The Stakes: What This Means

Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium has long been a revered venue, famed for its vibrant atmosphere and floodlit spectacle. The tragedy and subsequent fallout threaten not only its reputation but also Karnataka’s future as a cricketing powerhouse. With sweeping government and judicial scrutiny, a revamp of operations—and perhaps a rethink of location—seem inevitable.

The rescue and verification of Bengaluru’s status hinge on three factors:

1. Transparent, swift investigations into the stampede.

2. KSCA’s internal overhaul, including new leadership and enhanced safety systems.

3. Assurance from BCCI and ICC that the stadium can meet international standards.

Only then can fans once again enjoy top-tier cricket at Chinnaswamy without fear.
