Kigali – Australia claimed the gold medal in the Mixed Relay event at the Cycling World Championships in Kigali on Wednesday. The defending champions successfully retained their title in a thrilling finish, just edging out France and Switzerland.
The Australian team completed the 42.4km course in a winning effort, finishing:
- Five seconds ahead of silver-medallist France.
- Ten seconds ahead of bronze-medallist Switzerland.
The Australian Team Effort
The victory was a collective effort, with the Australian men setting a strong initial pace to establish a significant lead:
- Men’s Team: Luke Plapp, Michael Matthews, and Jay Vine. They finished their loop with a nearly 40-second lead over France.
- Women’s Team: Felicity Wilson-Haffenden, Brodie Chapman, and Amanda Spratt. The women faced a demanding second lap, battling altitude and high humidity while holding off the chasing French team.
Men’s rider Michael Matthews, nicknamed ‘Bling’, noted that the team had limited preparation, only arriving and riding the course the day before the race, as they were focused on the upcoming elite road races.
Podium Challengers and Event Context
Switzerland earned the bronze medal despite a significant setback, with all-rounder Marlen Reusser (who had won the women’s individual time-trial gold on Sunday) suffering a damaging mechanical incident that likely cost the team a chance at gold.
The Mixed Relay event, which debuted at the Yorkshire Worlds in 2019, continues to grow in popularity. The race structure involves three male riders completing one lap, then handing off to three female riders for the second lap.
A total of 16 nations participated in the event, including five African countries: Benin, Ethiopia, Mauritius, Rwanda, and Uganda.
