KAUNAS, LITHUANIA —Memphis Depay has made history, becoming the Netherlands’ all-time leading goal scorer after netting two goals in a crucial World Cup qualifier against Lithuania. The 31-year-old’s heroics, which sealed a hard-fought victory for his team in Kaunas, saw him surpass Robin van Persie’s previous record to reach a new milestone of 52 international goals.
Depay, who plays for Brazilian club Corinthians, broke the record with his 51st international goal after turning in a cross from Cody Gakpo. He then went on to score the winner with a powerful header from a Denzel Dumfries cross, solidifying the Netherlands’ position at the top of Group G.
