Ahmedabad to Host Weightlifting World Championships in 2029
Ahmedabad has been selected to host the senior Weightlifting World Championships in 2029, the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) announced on Sunday. The decision was taken at the federation鈥檚 executive board meeting in Ningbo, China, making India a host of the prestigious global competition for the first time.
The announcement adds to Ahmedabad鈥檚 growing profile as an international sporting destination, with the Gujarat city also scheduled to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
India to Host Senior World Championships for First Time
The 2029 edition will be the first time India hosts the senior Weightlifting World Championships. The IWF said it had awarded the hosting rights for two senior world championships, in 2029 and 2030, during the executive board meeting.
Moscow, the Russian capital, has been selected to host the 2030 edition. The federation also announced the host cities for two other international competitions, awarding the 2028 World Youth Championships to Prishtina in Kosovo and the World Junior Championships to Caracas in Venezuela.
IWF Highlights Global Growth of Weightlifting
IWF General Secretary Jos茅 Qui帽ones welcomed the successful bids, expressing confidence that the championships would be successful in their respective host countries.
He noted that Kosovo, Venezuela and India would organise an IWF world event for the first time, reflecting the sport鈥檚 expanding international reach and the growing interest among countries in hosting major competitions.
According to the federation, awarding four championships together is intended to consolidate its international calendar for the coming years.
Ahmedabad Strengthens Sporting Ambitions
Ahmedabad鈥檚 selection for the 2029 championships further strengthens India鈥檚 preparations for hosting major international sporting events. The city is scheduled to stage the 2030 Commonwealth Games and could also play a central role if India secures the right to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The weightlifting championships will offer India an opportunity to showcase its organisational capabilities while bringing leading athletes from around the world to Gujarat.
