President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday honoured NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) for their landmark triumph in the 134th edition of the Durand Cup, Asia’s oldest football competition. The Highlanders, who defended their title with a commanding 6-1 victory over Diamond Harbour FC at the Salt Lake Stadium, were hosted at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the special ceremony.
The President presented the President’s Cup, one of the three prestigious trophies awarded to the champions, to team owner John Abraham, skipper Redeem Tlang, and CEO Mandar Vijaykumar Tamhane. Dignitaries, members of the Durand Football Tournament Society, and the Organising Committee were also present.
Back-to-back glory for NEUFC
By retaining the title, NEUFC became the first club since East Bengal’s famous treble in 1989-91 to achieve back-to-back Durand Cup wins. Head coach Juan Pedro Benali’s side not only dominated the final but also showcased consistency throughout the tournament, establishing themselves as one of the strongest teams in Indian football.
Legacy of the President’s Cup
Instituted in 1956 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President’s Cup remains a symbol of excellence and heritage. The felicitation highlighted the long-standing association of the Indian Armed Forces with the Durand Cup and the role of the tournament in uniting football fans across the country.
Individual brilliance adds shine
NEUFC’s achievement was complemented by individual honours. Goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh bagged the Golden Glove for the second consecutive year, while Alaaeddine Ajaraie won both the Golden Ball for the Most Valuable Player and the Golden Boot as the tournament’s top scorer.
With this triumph, NorthEast United FC not only defended their crown but also strengthened their legacy in Indian football history.
